Manometer column

Description

Manometer consists of a rigid graduated tube (measured in centimetres of water) that is blind-ended at one end and connected to a 3-way stop cock at the other (please refer to datacard on 3-way stopcock for more detail on this device).

Method of use

The manometer column is used to measure central venous pressure (CVP). The 3-way stopcock is attached to the manometer column, a giving set and a manometer tube which connects the manometer to the CV catheter. The 3-way stopcock is opened so that IV fluid from a container fills the manometer. Then the tap is closed to the fluid bag and opened to the patient. Fluid in the manometer will fall to the level of the CVP and an average reading is taken (as level pulsates up and down during the reading). This system can be set up for long periods and the reading taken intermittently (for example, every hour).

Please note: usage of this device is in decline due to the increased use of electronic transducers to monitor CVP.

Please note: connectors on manometer column must be incompatible with 'non-luer' neuraxial connectors when adopted in Wales.
