Description
Luer activated device incorporating a valve through which connections can be made or medications introduced. The valve is designed to prevent fluid flow through the device until a mating Luer connection is inserted. Valve possesses a female luer lock at one end and male at the other. Used for intravenous or intra-arterial access (arterial needle-free connectors are same basic design but different size and colour coded red). Device must be MRI compatible and should possess a swabable membrane.

Method of use
The connector is attached to a catheter hub or extension set (such as a double or triple lumen catheter - see other datacards). The connector is swabbed with disinfectant and allowed to dry before being attached to a syringe or a primed IV set for the administration of fluid. Please see individual manufacturers instructions for specific information on use. Also used to access multi-dose vials and fluid bags and to take blood samples via syringe. The female luer lock can be attached to an IV set or syringe to infuse, or to take a blood sample. Arterial needle-free connectors are used to take arterial blood samples.
Some needle-free connectors provide 'positive end pressure' which maintains line patency. Needle-free connectors are left in place according to local policy and can be used for multiple applications. These differ in number according to manufacturer's instructions.
Many IV access devices (such as extension sets, vial access devices and giving sets) contain needle-free connectors but are not included on this datacard
Please note: Luer-compatible needle free connectors should be incompatible with whichever non-luer neuraxial connectors are adopted in the Welsh NHS
